Our Primary Program fosters
- Learning through exploration
- Development of strategic thinking
- Engaged learning through directed and self-initiated projects
To accommodate children’s tremendous growth in grades 1-3, each grade has a team of teachers who work together on each student’s individual needs. The children are assigned to a homeroom teacher who is responsible for most of their learning, especially in language literacy and mathematics. Even though Primary classrooms are self-contained, opportunities are offered for some units of study that allow the grade level team of teachers to work with all students, depending on their needs.
Students also benefit from off-campus field studies each year and the Distinguished Lecture Series, which connects students with community leaders who make a difference in our world.
“Hands-on” educational experiences are designed to provide students with experiences that embrace the world outside of the classroom.
Enrichment (art, Chinese, computer, library skills, music, STEM Lab, and physical education) continue through the elementary grades. Primary students also go to Strategy Lab and take part in games that emphasize problem solving and strategy, as well as the skills of good sportsmanship.
Our accelerated Lower School program focuses on ensuring that students attain a working fluency in fundamental skills across the curriculum.
Our Intermediate Program encourages
- Intellectual curiosity
- Making connections, asking questions
- Thinking analytically, acting with integrity.
During grades 4-6, students switch classes for some of their instruction creating a departmental atmosphere of junior high. Teachers provide a secure base for our pre-teenagers from which students can enter into greater autonomy, a process while involves risk-taking, success and failure.
Students are encouraged to cooperate rather than to compete, allowing them to share their unique gifts with each other.
All students participate in physical education and recess every day and students in grades 4 and 5 continue with the enrichments (i.e., art, Chinese, computer, library skills, and music). Grade six students have the additional opportunity to take Band. Upon completion of sixth grade, our students are well prepared to meet the challenges of the Upper School - academically, creatively, physically, and socially.
