Musical Arts

Whether a student experiences music in the classroom, in the private teaching studio, as a composer, or in an ensemble, active engagement and participation is at the heart of the Music program. The department welcomes students of all skill levels, those exploring music for the first time as well as accomplished musicians.

At the Lower School, the music program develops children’s innate love of singing, rhythm and dance. At the Upper School, the music courses range from the Introductory to the Advanced Placement level. Participation in ensemble music making is one of the most enriching experiences of school life and students have opportunities to participate in Band, Chorus and String at the high school and junior high levels.  Private vocal and instrumental instruction is available on campus.   In addition, there is an active senior chapter of Tri-M, the National Music Honor Society.

Students have many opportunities for public performance. Both informal "in-house" concerts and concerts of all large ensembles are offered annually. Music students perform for the FMEA sponsored music performance assessments as soloists and ensemble members. Students also may participate in the FMEA All State program.  The department sponsors an annual Independent Schools' Honor Chorus Festival.

Both the winter and spring concerts are held in the state of the art, Scott Center for Worship and the Performing Arts.  Music facilities include two performing stages, two large rehearsal rooms, one grand piano, seven upright pianos, two electronic pianos, two music technology labs, and four practice rooms.
