Tennis Player Morgan McCarthy Aims for Pro Status

As the world enjoys the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, one Holy Trinity seventh grader in particular has her eye on the games.
Morgan McCarthy dreams of one day becoming a professional tennis player and perhaps representing the United States in Olympic tennis. In fact, she’s already well on her way.

This summer, Morgan represented TEAM FLORIDA at the Zonal Championships and earned a spot in the National Clay Court Championships, where she won second place in the Southeast Division. This winter, she will participate in the Winter Nationals, the International Eddie Herr Junior Tennis Tournament and the Orange Bowl. Working with a private coach from Orlando, Morgan devotes 21-24 hours per week to her training, playing for two hours before school and either working out or hitting balls for an additional two hours in the evenings. She typically plays in at least two to three tournaments each month.

Last spring as a sixth grader, Morgan played on Holy Trinity’s varsity tennis team for the first time. By the end of the season, she remained undefeated and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. “I was really nervous and excited at the same time to play on the varsity team but I ended up having a blast,” Morgan recalled.  “Everyone was so nice and inviting.  I loved playing for Holy Trinity—it was one of my favorite HT memories so far!”

Where does the 12-year-old find the motivation to work so hard? Her love for the game, which she has been playing since she was three. “I love this sport because it’s really competitive but at the same time really fun. There is nothing like the feeling of winning a really tough match!  My favorite part about playing tennis is that I get to travel all around the U.S. and see and experience new things.”

Although she is extremely busy, the straight-A student balances tennis with schoolwork, friendships and other commitments by maintaining a strict schedule. “I am always on the go and I have gotten used to doing homework and studying in the car. I get to see my friends sometimes after school and on the weekends when I don’t have any tournaments. Somehow, I always get everything done.”

During a tough practice or a tough match, Morgan recalls her favorite mantra, borrowed from NIKE, “Success is not given. It’s earned. On the track, on the field, in the gym. With blood, sweat and the occasional tear.”

Another motto that’s meant a great deal to Morgan is Holy Trinity’s tagline, “Start Here. Go Anywhere.” Morgan explained, “Our slogan, ‘Start Here.  Go Anywhere,’ has given me the belief that the sky is the limit and that I truly can be or go anywhere in life!  Holy Trinity has always supported me in following my dreams and I am very grateful for all they do to make sure I have everything I need to have a successful future!“
