Chorus Presents Second Ever Chamber Opera

“An Evening of Classical Mystery”

Nov. 11 and 12
Three-Part Performance Hits Stage Nov. 11 and 12 at the Scott Center for Worship & the Performing Arts

Following last year’s successful debut of the chamber opera, “Evangeline,” junior and senior high chorus students at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy will take their art form to the next level with a new opera written exclusively for the school – a three-part performance entitled, “An Evening of Classical Mystery.” Performances will be held Friday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, at 7 p.m. at The Scott Center for Worship & the Performing Arts.

The opera was written for the students by Melbourne, Fla. native, C.E. Jones – a classical musician, composer, and doctoral student/teaching assistant at the University of West Virginia. Jones has composed original music for Hollywood films and his pieces have been performed by orchestras internationally, including the Israeli Philharmonic. He has played guitar and keyboard in regional and touring rock bands, as well as guitar and mandolin in several regional bluegrass bands.

Holy Trinity’s choral director, Lorie Wacaster, has been working with Jones on the opera for nearly a year. While Jones suggested using popular mysteries as the theme for the opera, the students chose three literary works that represent a progression in time: “Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe was published in 1843; “The Adventure of Silver Blaze” by Arthur Conan Doyle was published in 1892; and “The Witness for the Prosecution” by Agatha Christie was first published in the United States in 1948. Jones then created the libretto, the story behind the opera. The three segments will be presented in a progression of theatrical styles: “Tell Tale Heart” will be presented in the style of German expressionistic theater; “Silver Blaze” as a melodrama; and “”Witness” in a realistic style.

The play is directed by Wacaster and student director, senior Cassidy McNair. McNair is responsible for all props, costuming, and blocking – the physical placement and movement of the characters – and assists the director. She also plays the character Mayherne in “Witness.”
