International Student Shines at Holy Trinity

Senior Tim Ma earned the 2016 Dean’s Leadership Award from Columbia University after participating in their summer program.
More than 2,000 students were eligible for the prestigious award, but only 20 were selected. Instructors and program assistants nominated students who demonstrated “excellence among their peers in the program values of academic excellence, peer leadership and community building, and community service.” Tim shared about his experience at Columbia, and at Holy Trinity as an international student from China.
 
Please describe your experience at Columbia University this summer.
I studied in Columbia University during the summer for the course of entrepreneurship of innovation. I lead the team and built a start-up program named 1-2-one, a platform to connect the younger and older generations.
 
Why did you choose to apply for the program?
Columbia University has always been my top choice and I went there to get to know more about this school. I did not expect such an outstanding summer experience since I met some really nice and intelligent friends up there.
 
What do you hope to study in college?
 I am thinking about economics, business, movies, or theoretical Physics.
 
What do you hope to pursue as a career?
I want to be an entrepreneur, designer, and a writer.
 
Please describe your experience at Holy Trinity as part of the international program. What do you enjoy most about going to school at HT?
 Holy Trinity has offered me a great platform for international understanding and cultural blending. I have made many friends here and many great teachers have made an impact on how I view the world.
 
You have really embraced many aspects of life at Holy Trinity—including starring in an opera last year! What advice would you give to other international students?
Do not fear to step out of your comfort zone; do have faith in yourself and know what you want to accomplish here in United States.
 
Is there a particular teacher who has had a positive impact on your experience here? If so, whom and why?
Mr. Herntier has been the best Physics teacher ever! I have liked physics but he is really the person who ignited my love of physics. His humor and knowledge have created a great classroom vibe where I can ask questions freely and express my own understanding.
 
How do you feel Holy Trinity is helping you to “Start Here. Go Anywhere.”?
It is truly a place that leads me to a bigger stage. It perfected me along the way and I really appreciate that.
