Music Department Adaptations

Over the past few months, our Music Department has undertaken a great deal of research regarding musical instruments and aerosols, and how to make our programs as safe as possible. All of the modifications in place have been made at the recommendation of the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Association) and the CBDNA (College Band Directors National Association) study titled the “International Coalition of Performing Arts Aerosol Study.” The study is ongoing; however, the performing arts faculty, along with Holy Trinity’s Health and Safety Committee, have implemented the following policies and procedures to be in place until further notice.

At the Lower School:

  • Students will not be sharing instruments during music class.
  • The room and instruments will be cleaned after each class.
  • Two additional air purifiers have been purchased by the Music Boosters for the music room.
  • Singing will only occur with face coverings on, distance between students and for no more than 20 minutes at a time.
  • Outside space for singing will be utilized when appropriate.
  • MusicFirst Junior On-Line Software has been purchased to enhance students school and at home learning.

At the Upper School:

  • Chamber Ensemble- and Strings-focused performances allow for smaller groups and individuals to work together rather than large ensembles.
  • There will be limited after school commitments through the fall semester
  • There will be 6 to 9 feet social distancing in all wind classes (Woodwinds, Brass, Concert Band and Symphonic Band and Chorus)
  • Custom-designed musician performance face coverings enable all wind players to play with a face covering and still allow access to play their instrument
  • Custom-designed Bell Covers fitted with MERV 13 filtration material fit over all wind instrument bells (except flute)
  • Flute Air Shields and pop covers allow our flute players to play comfortably without worry of excess air flow
  • Newly purchased (thanks to music boosters) additional/portable UV-C air filters for all music classrooms provide additional air filtration and air exchange
  • We’ve created smaller class sizes and limited our instrument rehearsals to 30 minutes for all winds classes. Chorus singing time will be limited to 30 minutes in one space, with warm ups outside as able.
  • Individual Mouthpiece and Instrument Care kits will be required.
  • Sterisol Mouthpiece and Instrument Cleaner will be provided for all wind players.
  • Percussionists will be required to purchase individual stick and mallet packs as they have done in the past.
  • Any shared percussion equipment will be cleaned between each use.
  • We’ve purchased the Music First digital music program for all students to enhance our in class experience should we need to go online.
  • There will be no sharing of stringed instruments and one student per music stand.
  • Chorus students will be asked to put on a fresh face covering, preferably a disposable surgical face covering for choir.
  • Chorus will make use of outdoor space for rehearsal when appropriate, maintaining 6 foot spacing and wearing face coverings.
  • Touchless hand sanitizer dispensers are mounted at the both doors for use upon entering and exiting the room.
  • There will be increased requirements for instruments/equipment to go home and be cleaned appropriately
  • We’ve added personalized/individualized instrument storage to minimize touching of equipment.
