Our remote learning program will provide a high level of support, direct instruction, and interaction for those families choosing this option. Remote instruction makes use of the approved HTEA Upper School curriculum and resources and is to be completed at the pace determined by the teacher to facilitate a seamless transition between in-person and remote learning.

Remote Learning Resources

List of 6 frequently asked questions.

  • Upper School Remote Learning Guidelines

    • Remote learning will be synchronous (five days a week, 8 a.m. - 3:10 p.m.).

    • Interaction between on-campus faculty and peers will be via webcams and microphones in each classroom.

    • Teachers will use Microsoft Teams or Google Meets video conferencing software to set up daily meetings for each class period.

    • Health permitting, remote learning students will log into each meeting and actively participate in daily direct instruction provided by teachers for each class.

    • Attendance will be recorded for every class and students will be expected to log into each class every day (unless otherwise notified by the teacher).

    • Organization of daily activities will be through the student’s onCampus account. Some asynchronous activities will occur in relation to project-based learning, physical education and certain elective courses.

    • All student assignments will be the same for on campus and remote learners. Remote learners will submit completed work digitally via onCampus according to the teacher's determined deadlines. Grades will be updated in onCampus at regular intervals for all students.

    • Interaction with faculty beyond class sessions will utilize remote office hours (phone, email, message as needed).

    • Chapel and assemblies will be available to view via livestream.

    • The daily schedule will include extended breaks between classes and longer lunch periods to provide remote learners a similar break from screen time (see below for sample schedules).

Remote learning students who wish to participate in athletics will need to communicate with James Phillips, Athletic Director, and the Head of Junior High or Senior High prior to starting practices/games.

  • Physical Education for Remote Learners

For remote learners that are enrolled in a Physical Education course, teachers will assign daily activities that are designed to get students on their feet and active. Activity logs will be submitted to each teacher weekly for grading purposes. Students are encouraged to participate during their scheduled class period to help break up their screen time, but the assigned physical activity may be done asynchronously in order to allow each student to create a daily schedule that is most productive for him/her.
  • Science Labs for Remote Learners

Many of our science teachers have been working on multiple options for labs, including lab simulations for both in-person and remote learners. If materials will be required for a lab, teachers will communicate a list of materials needed as well as making those materials, when possible, available for pick-up in the front office.
  • Fine Arts Classes for Remote Learners

Visual Arts teachers will be preparing materials for students to participate in scheduled projects from home. Students will be expected to participate in any live/direct instruction portions of each class and work on their projects as students do so in the classroom. Art supplies can be picked up in the front office, but families are allowed to provide their own materials if they wish. A list of materials will be made available for every unit.

Students in a Performing Arts course are encouraged to participate in teacher-directed activities daily during the scheduled class period; however, much of the work associated with these courses can be done asynchronously in order to allow students to create a daily schedule that is most productive for them. Students will have weekly one-on-one interactions with Performing Arts teachers approximately two times a week at a time mutually agreed upon by teacher and student.
