STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) Education

At Holy Trinity, hands-on scientific discovery was part of our curriculum long before the STEAM acronym became commonplace among schools. Along the Space Coast in particular, students can aspire to a wealth of career options in aerospace, engineering and research. As Melbourne's premier private school, Holy Trinity is at the forefront in providing a technology-rich learning environment to support our STEAM initiatives. Our 21st century learning environment is supported with Mimio interactive white boards and Chromebooks in every classroom, iPads, laptops, and a competent faculty who integrate technology seamlessly and authentically in classroom activities.

Lower School STEAM Program

Making connections from science to the real world starts as early as age three at Holy Trinity, where students in preschool through grade four attend weekly STEAM Lab in addition to their regular science classes. Each grade features a customized course of study to ensure that students build on their knowledge base each year. Topics are often introduced through children’s literature or current events, helping students to understand the relevance of STEAM concepts and to learn to be more complete problem solvers.

Fifth and sixth grade students may opt to participate in Tech Lab, a hands-on, technology based learning experience featuring curriculum from nationally renowned STEAM program Project Lead the Way (PLTW). PLTW features engaging classroom lessons that help students develop in-demand knowledge and skills. Students may choose from several course offerings such as computer science, energy and the environment, design and modeling, medical detectives, and more. In addition to PLTW, the Tech Lab features computer science, 3-D printing, and media creation skills for an immersive technology-based learning experience.

Traditional courses including weekly art and music classes remain an important part of the program of studies for all students preschool through sixth grade, teaching them both skills and appreciation, as well as the value of self-expression.

Upper School STEAM Program

At Holy Trinity’s Upper School, which serves grades 7-12, nature is the ultimate classroom, as the campus sits on 55 acres, more than half undeveloped. Ecological features include a 2.5-acre manmade lake, two major wetlands, upland forest, and mixed scrubland. Customary high school science courses including Chemistry and Physical Science are complemented by specialized classes including Field Ecology/Biology; Earth and Space Science; Science Research; and Science, Sustainability & Civilization. High school students also have the opportunity to travel each year on field studies to the Galapagos Islands or Costa Rica, thanks to a partnership with Florida Institute of Technology.

Continuing our Lower School curriculum, junior high and high school students have the opportunity to enroll in three Project Lead The Way (PLTW) classes as part of our STEAM program: Introduction to Engineering and Robotics, Engineering Design and Principles of Engineering, offering students a broad look at various engineering disciplines, programs and applications.

Additionally, computer-based courses such as C++ Programming, Computer Science and Computer Graphics Design are also available. Even fine arts courses incorporate technology in the form of claymation videos and sophisticated digital photography projects using professional-grade software such as iMovie and Adobe Creative Cloud.

Extracurricular activities also reinforce our STEAM curriculum, including our drone racing team, and Junior High (FTC) and High School (FRC) level robotics teams. Junior high and high school students can study drone theory, learn to fly drones and participate in local competitions. Both robotics teams compete in US FIRST organization competitions. In 2019, the high school FRC team placed 16th of 64 teams from around the world at the South Florida Regional competition, with senior team members going on to attend Ivy League and other elite engineering schools, including Brown, Georgia Tech, Stanford, and USC.
