Finding the Right College for You

Be sure to keep in mind:

  • There is more than one “right” school for you. They may not all be “brand name” or popular colleges but ones where you can be a “big fish” in a smaller pond and have great outcomes.
  • College admission is a mutual selection process. You choose colleges and colleges choose students.
  • Be proactive: Visiting college campuses is one of the best ways to get a sense of the types of schools that are “right” for you.
  • Go for quality, not quantity when building your resume. Colleges look for students with in-depth experiences versus a laundry list of things you’ve dabbled in.
  • Be meticulous and professional in your communications and applications to colleges.
  • Meet all deadlines and recognize the consequences for missed deadlines.
  • Don’t rule out colleges based on cost until you have exhaustively researched the types and amounts of assistance available. You may be surprised what you find!
The school and college counseling staff plans activities for high school students including career assessments, personality profiling, interest inventories, research of college and universities, completion of applications, interviews with college representatives, and more.
