High School Students Host Leadership Conference for Area Freshmen March 18

On Saturday, March 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., ninth grade students from Brevard County high schools, as well as ninth grade home school students, are invited to participate in the second annual Community Leadership Workshop (CLeW) sponsored by the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) organization and hosted by Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy.
To attend the program, students must apply via an online application no later than Saturday, March 4, and will be notified of their acceptance within 10 days of application. Space is limited. There is no cost to attend the workshop.

The one-day leadership seminar is designed to introduce to high school freshmen the concept of leadership as a discipline to be explored and learned. Students will interact with local community leaders as well as upperclass students who are HOBY alumni, and will participate in group activities. Lunch will be provided.

This marks the second time that a CLeW has been held in Brevard County. Holy Trinity seniors Abi Dandapani and Cindy Hall volunteered to organize the workshop after leading the inaugural effort last year. “This year, we are hoping to increase our number of attendees,” said Dandapani. “We want younger students to be inspired to go out into the community and do more service.” During their sophomore year, students may be nominated and selected for the three-day Mid-Florida HOBY seminar.

Dandapani and Hall are part of Holy Trinity’s Tiger Leadership program in which students who display leadership potential are selected to participate in programs such as HOBY leadership training. Founded in 1958, HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. HOBY programs are conducted annually throughout the United States, serving local and international high school students. HOBY programs provide students selected by their schools to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences. Due to the efforts of volunteers and the contributions of generous donors, nearly 10,000 students participate in HOBY programs annually.

In the written application, prospective attendees are asked questions including, “What advice would you give to someone going into a leadership position for the first time?” and “How can a leader fail? Tell about a time you failed as a leader.”

Holy Trinity junior and Tiger Leadership member Zach McManus is also helping to organize the leadership seminar. “This workshop is a great way for future leaders to come together and share their unique opinions and experiences in a different atmosphere than at their individual schools. The workshop is a combination of fun activities, bonding, and influential insight on what it is like to be a young leader surrounded by others who share similarities but have many differences.”
