Heart Screenings for Upper School Students

On Tuesday, April 4, in partnership with “Who We Play For,” Holy Trinity will be conducting voluntary heart screenings for all Upper School students.
Who We Play For is the largest heart screening non-profit in the country, started here in Brevard County after the death of Cocoa Beach High School student athlete Rafe Maccarone. Their mission is to significantly reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac arrest in student athletes by providing affordable electrocardiograms (ECGs).  Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in sports – more than any form of cancer, concussion or illness combined. Thousands of seemingly healthy kids die every single year due to detectable heart conditions. All students are encouraged to participate in the screening regardless of their level of athletic involvement.

This opportunity was brought to Holy Trinity by Team Nina. Nina Cinca is a Holy Trinity sophomore who successfully underwent a heart transplant two years ago. Team Nina will cover the cost of screenings at Holy Trinity to ensure that every student has the opportunity to have their heart checked free of charge; however, a donation of $15 is encouraged so that we may “pay it forward” to assist other families in the future.

To sign up your child for a heart screening, please fill out the attached consent form and return it to either Scott Crockett, Vicki Bransford or Chris Arter in the main office by Friday, March 31.

Why take advantage of this electrocardiogram (ECG) heart screening?
 
  • The standard physical is statistically proven to be less than 1% effective at detecting any heart conditions, adding an ECG improves those odds to 89%.
  • " A new report in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology shows that the electrocardiogram (ECG) is the best single screening method.' 
  • “NCAA study demonstrates that the incidence rate of sudden cardiac death (SCD) is significantly higher than frequently cited estimates”. SCD in African American Male Basketball players is as high as 1 in 3,126.
  • Advised for every athlete by the Florida High School Athletic Association.

What is Who We Play For?

Who We Play For is the biggest heart screening non-profit in the country, started right here in Brevard County after the death of CBHS student athlete Rafe Maccarone. Their mission is to significantly reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac arrest in student athletes by providing affordable electrocardiograms (ECGs).  

Who We Play For represents every young athlete who lost their life due to a detectable heart condition missed in their physical. 

By partnering with 300+ schools, Who We Play For has screened 80,000+ student athletes and saved the lives 66 student athletes, all who had previously undetected life threatening heart conditions missed in their physical. Out of those 66 student athletes, only 8 were unable to resume competitive play.
