Coronavirus Update for Upper School

We are continuing to keep a close eye on developments of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United States and abroad.
Dear Upper School Parents,

As you may know, Governor DeSantis has issued a decree giving executive authority to the Florida Department of Education and Commissioner of Education, Richard Corcoran, to close all public and private K-12 schools through April 15, 2020

We know this is a stressful time for many of our families and we appreciate your patience and support as we navigate uncharted territory. Please rest assured that our faculty and staff is working diligently to activate plans for remote instruction to begin on Tuesday, March 24. In addition to your child’s faculty, we will have additional support staff to assist you with any technical difficulties you may have. Our goal is to balance the need for instruction with the logistical and emotional challenges that this unique situation brings.

As you enjoy your last few days of spring break, please take the opportunity to talk with your students to reinforce our message that school does, in fact, begin again next Tuesday, albeit online versus in person. Remote learning is not a vacation or an extended break. While our faculty will do their absolute best to prepare and deliver thorough and engaging lessons, students also must be prepared to approach virtual learning with self-discipline and commitment, and you as parents should be prepared to partner with us in your child’s education as we tackle this “new normal” together.

We ask that Upper School students commit to checking each of their teachers’ onCampus pages every day to be sure they are keeping on top of assignments. As is currently the case, teachers may have different requirements. Some may post daily homework, while some may post a weekly assignment. Some may require students to be present for a virtual chat at their normal class time, while some may allow students the autonomy to work on their own time. Please be on the lookout for additional information from your child’s teachers next week. If you or your student has any difficulty logging on or accessing onCampus pages, please direct them to email the IT helpdesk at: helpdesk@htes.org.

We realize many of you have questions regarding specific events, field studies or athletics that were previously scheduled for the coming month. The FHSAA has made the decision to postpone all scheduled FHSAA meetings, conferences, and athletic events until further notice. Our leadership team will be meeting later this week to discuss the remainder of the spring calendar. More information will be shared with you regarding any cancellations or postponements as soon as those decisions have been made.

Finally, please be aware that due to the increased worldwide demand on our emergency notification service, BrightArrow, we will no longer be able to notify you each time we send out new information. Please be diligent in checking your email messages. All new information will also be posted on the website. If you are not receiving email messages from us, please check your junk folder. If you still are not receiving emails, please contact: helpdesk@htes.org

During this time, we are reminded of the command of Israel found in Isaiah 41:10, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

We will hold tight to this promise as we enter this new challenge in teaching and learning. If you have circumstances that will make remote learning challenging for your family or if you need special assistance from us, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Sincerely,
