Future Problem Solvers to Compete in State Conference
Holy Trinity’s Future Problem Solving (FPS) team has been selected to compete at the Florida Future Problems Solvers State Competition in Orlando March 31-April 2. They will be presenting their project, A Future Set in Stone, to a panel of judges in the Community Problem Solving division. The winner of the state level will compete at the International Problem Solvers convention in June.
The Holy Trinity FPS team created the program in 2015, inviting fellow students to volunteer at Stone Middle School in Melbourne every Tuesday to provide tutoring and peer mentoring to 7th and 8th graders. Their aim is to help students set academic achievement goals and help them to think beyond high school. Members of the FPS team include: Stacey Torkelson, Olivia Pitten, Drew DeSalvo, Kathy Jara, Lucy Thomas, Hannah Lee, Sydney Sergis and Sarah Braddock.
Torkelson recently was selected as Stone’s Youth Volunteer of the Year and was honored by Brevard County Public Schools at their ABC Awards (Applauding Brevard’s Champions).
Of her experience Torkelson said, “I started my work at Stone as a team community problem solving project in my junior year because I've always had an immense passion for working with kids and teaching. It's become such a big part of my life that I'm grateful for, because it has put kids in my life that I love working with and that have shown me what I hope to do in my career.”
