Mrs. Houser

Lower School Librarian
Degree/School:   Bachelor of Science in Education from University of Tennessee; Master of Library Service from University of Alabama.
How do you feel you can help students to “Start Here. Go Anywhere.”?
By providing students with a love of reading, information retrieval skills and opportunities to be creative, the library curriculum ensures that students are equipped to prosper both in school and in life.

What motivated you to become an educator?
My third grade teacher, Mrs. Diane Creech, read aloud to the class every day and inspired my love of reading. She seemed to enjoy teaching and made her students enjoy learning.  I wanted to be like her.

What experiences or people have had the most influence on you?
Dr. Philip Turner, who was the Dean of the library school at UA.  He said that the role of the school librarian was “to encourage a love of reading, teach information retrieval skills and help teachers teach.”

How do you keep current with the subject areas you cover?
I subscribe to professional journals such as The Horn Book and School Library Journal; I attend professional conferences such as FAME (Florida Association for Media in Education.) This summer, I attended the American Library Association conference. Twitter has been instrumental in helping me develop a professional learning network. Several of the professional organizations to which I belong offer online webinars.  I also took an online class on Students with Special Needs in the Library.
