Academic Team

Congratulations to the 2017 Academic Team, who placed 2nd of 15 teams in The Brevard County Academic Challenge on Monday evening, Nov. 13, 2017. The team moved up from a sixth place finish last year.
The Academic Challenge is a series of quiz-bowl competitions in which 15 Brevard County public and private schools compete. The meets feature three rounds of questions with increasing point-values: 1st round, 5 points, 2nd round, 10 points, 3rd round, 15 points. After each competition, the teams were ranked according to the highest number of points and most questions answered.

This year, two new sponsors, Mr. David Bonanza and Mr. Wayne Cattell, led a team of about 30 members. These students practiced twice a week on Monday and Wednesday morning before school. Our top performers for the year were Hari Dandapani, Saurav Ghosal, Sajan Gutta, Colin McLaughlin, and Luca Valdivia. Sara Barker, Kai Bartolone, Hanya Irfan, Sarah Kimmerling, Jaiden Martin, Lam Nguyen, Bradley Park, Esha Patel, Nikhil Patel, Ethan Potter, Sakthi Sabapathy, Michael Tomadakis, Dante Valdivia, Jason Veizaj, Jake Vigeant, and Isabella Weiner also made strong contributions at various matches. Many of these students are underclassmen and will certainly contribute to the team’s success for years to come.

Approximately 12 students participated in each match, and each school was allowed to make substitutions after each of the three rounds. In the meets, only five students can participate at a time, and the Holy Trinity team worked hard to balance their goals of finishing the season in the top six in order to qualify for the championship, and giving a variety of students a chance to get involved. The team finished in second place in most of the regular season meets, competing against five different schools each meet. The sixth and final meet of the regular season was the only one in which Holy Trinity was not in the top three of its group, and the team ended the regular season in fourth place based on average ranking and average points.

At Monday evening’s championship, the HT Academic Team responded with an amazing performance. Holy Trinity was in first place for most of the championship meet and came in second by only two points. In the championship, Holy Trinity beat the to-ranked regular season team, West Shore. According to Mr. Bonanza and Mr. Cattell, the team learned a great deal through the course of the season, and looks forward to competing next year.
